Volvos have always been sort of ‘quirky cars, for quirky people’. They weren’t bad cars, but the styling usually evoked a ‘love it or hate it’ response. But the premium car market has changed considerably over the last decade. More people can now afford to drive nicer cars, and many of these new customers live in China, Volvo’s de facto home market (Ford sold Volvo to Chinese automaker Geely in 2010). First introduced in 2000, the Volvo S60 was designed to compete in the same sport sedan league as the BMW 3-Series, Audi A4, and Mercedes C-Class. It didn’t really hurt German sport sedan sales, but it didn’t do too badly either. The second generation has done a lot better, and its sales tally is nipping on the heels of the uber-popular Audi A4. With distinct styling, and a coupe-like profile, the current-gen Volvo S60 finally presents itself as a true sport sedan. Under those curvaceous lines is a solid platform, which can be coaxed into sporty behavior, depending on the model you choose. The base Volvo S60 T5 comes with a turbocharged 5-cyl, and front-wheel drive. Yawn. Add the optional torque-vectoring Haldex AWD system, and things suddenly get more interesting. Next up the fun scale is the 300-hp Volvo S60 T6 AWD, followed by the full-bore Volvo S60 T6 R-Design. The latter makes 325-hp from its turbocharged inline-6, and that’s enough grunt to propel this vivacious Volvo to 60 mph in 5.5 seconds. It’s no M3 substitute, but it’s a heck of a lot faster than your mom’s old 240 wagon.
