Nissan Sentra Overview

The Nissan Sentra is a relatively long-running compact car that has been in production since 1982. Like many vehicles, the Sentra has grown in size over time. Up until 2000, it was classified as a subcompact vehicle. It is now marketed as more of a compact car, though it is officially classified by the Environmental Protection Agency in the United States as a mid-sized car. The first generation of the Nissan Sentra took over for the Datsun 210 as a small vehicle with rigid styling lines that was available in four different body styles. The second generation took over in 1985 and ran through 1990, maintaining numerous body styles and with little noticeable change to the styling of the vehicle. The third generation ran from 1991 through 1994, with the vehicle gaining a slightly sleeker profile that appeared a bit longer and lower to the ground. The Sentra was down to one body style, a sedan that was available with two or four doors. In 1995, the fourth generation launched. It would last until 1999. The Sentra was down to a four-door sedan by this time, and its styling began to be a bit more rounded around the edges. The fifth generation ran from 2000 through 2006 and the style became a lot more rounded or bubbly, while the car was officially falling into the compact class, replacing the Altima, which became a mid-sized vehicle in 2002. In 2004, the Sentra got a styling facelift but remained in the same generation. The sixth generation ran from 2007 through 2012, with the car’s profile become significantly more rounded. It was at this point that the EPA officially called the Sentra a mid-sized sedan because of the interior space, which fell on the bottom of the mid-sized range at 110 cubic feet. The seventh generation launched in 2013 with a complete redesign. Competition for the newest Sentra includes the Chevrolet Cruze, Hyundai Elantra, Toyota Corolla and Ford Focus.
