Hyundai Sonata Overview

The Hyundai Sonata is one of Hyundai’s best-known vehicles due to its long run of production dating back to 1985 worldwide and the 1989 model year in the United States. It’s a mid-sized car that competes with the Toyota Camry, Chevrolet Malibu, Nissan Altima and Ford Fusion. For the first few years of its production, the Sonata did not meet United States emissions standards. By the time the second generation rolled around, though, the Sonata was available in the U.S. with a 1989 launch. The second generation ran through the 1993 model year, with minimal styling changes heading into the third generation from the 1994 through 1999 model years. During the third generation, the Sonata got styling upgrades in 1996 that rounded out its lines a bit and gave it a more modern look. At this point the Sonata was still, like Hyundai’s line, considered a bargain-value car with questionable reliability. This reputation began to change in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s during the fourth generation, which ran from the 1999 model year through the 2005 model year. Once again, the Sonata got a mid-generation facelift for the 2001 model year. By the time the fifth generation rolled out in the 2006 model year, Hyundai’s brand value was growing. Still, the design was somewhat uninspired until the sixth and current generation, which launched in the 2011 model year. The vehicle’s profile is now much smoother and gives the Sonata an up to date look.
