Full Size Trucks with Best Gas Mileage

Chevrolet is promoting the 2024 Silverado EV as “the pickup truck reimagined.” Actually, the reimagining began with Rivian and then Ford, the first companies to offer all-electric pickup trucks.

Even the Silverado EV’s crew-cab, two-row, five-seat styling is more homage than trendsetter. It looks a bit like the larger and more powerful GMC Hummer EV Pickup introduced in 2020. And both trucks borrow from the 20-year-old Chevy Avalanche with cab and frame in one unit, stiffened by flying buttress “sail” panels that extend from the rear of the cab roof down to the forward rails of the bed. The Silverado EV also reprises the Avalanche’s mid-gate, which opens the back of the cab beneath the rear window to lengthen the pickup bed’s cargo area when needed.

Still, the Silverado EV is only the fourth mass-production, full-size electric pickup to hit the market, and that gives it groundbreaker cred. The Tesla Cybertruck beat it into consumers’ hands by a few months and the Ram 1500 REV is slated to follow by late 2024, early 2025. The Cybertruck really doesn’t compete with anything else, leaving the Ford F-150 Lightning and Rivian R1T as the Silverado EV’s current rivals.

Ultimately, there could be a half-dozen retail and commercial versions of the Silverado EV, but for now Chevy is starting with just one, the RST First Edition. Availability is limited, especially compared to the F-150, which Ford has had in production for two years. Pricing is steep for the initial trim, and Ford and Rivian both have models that undercut it. A Silverado EV Trail Boss will follow in 2025, and Chevrolet hints at other trim levels to come. For commercial truck buyers, Chevy already offers the Silverado EV in 4WT and 3WT trims, with more to come.

The Silverado EV First Edition RST is fairly powerful — up to 754 horsepower with a maximum 10,000-pound tow capacity — and will deliver class-leading driving range of 440 miles, according to a Chevrolet’s estimate.

Chevrolet makes all of its infotainment and safety tech, including the SuperCruise hands-free highway driving feature, available on the Silverado EV First Edition RST, although some features may be optional on lower trims.

The full-size pickup truck market only has a few major players, yet it is one of the most highly contested segments in the U.S. And when one of those offerings consistently tops the sales charts, it's clearly doing something right. Introduced more than 75 years ago, the F-Series is in its 14th generation, and its continued improvements in performance and innovation make it tough to beat.

With the aim of offering something for everyone, Ford makes the F-150 in hundreds of configurations with multiple body styles, bed lengths, powertrains, and trim levels. The base-level XL is ideal as the basic work truck, while the Platinum and King Ranch trims boast interiors and features on par with luxury sedans. For off-road enthusiasts, there’s the F-150 Tremor and extreme Raptor R.

Multiple engines are available in the 2025 F-150, ranging from the standard 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6, delivering 325 horsepower, to the supercharged V8 engine in the Raptor R, which boasts more than 700 hp. Ford also offers a powerful and efficient hybrid powertrain that is available with a convenient 7.2 kW generator built in. Additionally, Ford builds the full-electric F-150 Lightning, reviewed separately.

The F-150's competition includes the Ram 1500, Chevrolet Silverado 1500, GMC Sierra 1500, and Toyota Tundra. The F-150 beats them all in terms of towing and payload capability. It also stands out with a range of innovative features, such as the new Pro Access Tailgate with a swing gate for easy access to the bed when pulling a trailer.

The Ram 1500 Classic is the mom-and-pop pizza shop in a town full of Michelin-starred cuisine; it's not fancy, and the recipes haven't changed, but good ingredients and a splash of charm keep it in business. The 1500 Classic is a holdover of the fourth-generation Ram, its platform dating back to 2009. The Ram 1500 underwent a sleek redesign in 2019, but the old model, dubbed the 1500 Classic, remained in production. Ram clearly knew there was still demand for the old model, which makes sense, as the fourth generation won praise for its comfort, capability, and chiseled good looks.

In the fast-paced full-size truck segment of 2024, the 1500 Classic's weaknesses are apparent, with outdated powertrains and technology that have been surpassed by rivals from Chevy, Ford, Toyota, and, of course, the fifth-gen Ram 1500. But lemons make wonderful lemonade, and customers continue to seek out the 1500 Classic specifically because it doesn't traffic in the newest trends. A no-frills driving experience and tried-and-true dependability make the 1500 Classic a top choice for those wanting the benefits of a truck of yesteryear with the warranty and showroom condition of a new vehicle.

The 1500 Classic is capable in the ways that matter, with solid construction, a comfortable interior, an optional HEMI V8, and up to 10,620 pounds of towing. It comes standard with a heavy-duty suspension and four-wheel disc brakes, with available features like Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and an off-roading package with a one-inch factory lift. Rivals come with more body styles and options for configuration, but pricing is higher. Upper trims of the Ford F-150 and the new Ram 1500 are seriously luxurious, while the Chevy Silverado offers superb trailering apps that take the guesswork out of towing. But no matter, the Ram 1500 Classic is here to meet the needs of buyers who prefer Merle's pizza to Wolfgang's truffle risotto.

What is the 2025 Ineos Grenadier Quartermaster? It's the second vehicle from the new carmaker Ineos, founded by a billionaire chemical magnate who also owns the Belstaff clothing label and sponsors an Americas Cup yacht. The Quartermaster is the pickup truck version of the Grenadier Station Wagon, which is actually an SUV. They both have strong visual ties to the classic Land Rover Defender but have no formal association.

Unlike other billionaire-financed projects, the Grenadier models are powered by BMW-sourced internal combustion engines instead of fully electric powertrains. They're also intended for legitimate off-road adventures rather than cruising city boulevards, and as a result, they can feel rather primitive on pavement. For buyers with a penchant for exploring, that's fine, but they could be in for a bit of sticker shock.

The Grenadier Quartermaster has a starting price shy of $90,000, which is well beyond what we'd expect for a midsize pickup truck. Sure, you'll get a unique rig that will stand out from other rock crawlers, but we expect more comfort and technology at that price. And due to a 25% tariff on imported light trucks, the Quartermaster costs about $15,000 more than its SUV sibling. That's a tough pill to swallow, but if you have the money and want a pickup with this aesthetic, there isn't any other choice.
